Myanmar is well endowed with natural river resources. The Ayeyarwaddy, Chindwin, Thanlwin and Sittaung rivers are flowing from north to south and the north south direction of the mountain ranges of Myanmar is reflected in course of river valleys running from north to south divided each other by mountain ranges and the plateau . Therefore, the inland waterways transportation in Myanmar will be better than other modes of transport in long term with the following reasons-

•	Least cost transport for heavy and bulky cargoes.
•	Capability of large amount of cargoes in one time from one destination to another.
•	A fuel efficient and environment friendly mode of transportation.
•	No need to huge investment for the infrastructure like other modes of transport and need  annual cost for maintenance of river channels.
•	Cheapest mean of transport of raw materials and finished goods of various industries along the river sides.
